A plain comparison of web apps and native mobile apps for Malaysian businesses: cost, app store fees, updates, offline use and notifications, and when each one makes sense.
Many business owners say "I want an app" when what they really need is for customers or staff to do something quickly on their phones. That can be done with a native mobile app downloaded from the App Store and Google Play, or with a web app that opens in the browser and can be added to the home screen. Choosing the right one first can save you months and a large part of your budget.
The quick difference
- Web app: one system that runs in any browser on phones, tablets and computers. Customers open a link; no download required. It can be installed on the home screen as a progressive web app (PWA).
- Native mobile app: separate apps built for iPhone and Android, distributed through the app stores, with deeper access to phone hardware.
Cost and maintenance
A web app is built once and works everywhere, so the first version usually costs less and is faster to launch. Native apps often need iPhone and Android versions, plus app store accounts: Apple's developer programme charges an annual fee and Google Play a one-time registration fee. Every native update must also pass app store review, while a web app update is live as soon as it is published.
What web apps can do today
- Customer logins, bookings, orders and payments through FPX or card gateways.
- Camera access for photo uploads, and location for delivery or field staff check-ins.
- Installation on the home screen with its own icon.
- Push notifications on Android and, for installed web apps, on recent iPhone versions.
- Instant sharing by WhatsApp link, which matters a lot in Malaysia.
When a native mobile app makes more sense
- Your app must work fully offline for long periods, for example in remote sites.
- You need advanced hardware features such as Bluetooth devices, NFC or background tracking.
- Being listed in the app stores is part of your marketing, such as a consumer brand with a loyalty programme.
- You already have a large, loyal customer base who will download and keep the app.
A practical path for most SMEs
- Launch a mobile-friendly web app that handles the core process: bookings, orders, a customer portal or a staff dashboard.
- Measure how customers and staff use it for a few months.
- If you hit a real limit, such as offline use or a hardware need, build native apps later using the same database, so nothing is wasted.
Customers who discover you on Google can also land directly on web app pages, which a native app cannot offer on its own.
