Website Maintenance in Malaysia: What Actually Needs Doing After Launch

📅 23 September 20268 min read← Back to Blog

A broken contact form can cost more than a year of maintenance fees. Here is the weekly, monthly and yearly schedule your Malaysian business website needs — and what it should cost.

Most Malaysian SMEs budget carefully for building a website and budget nothing for keeping it alive. Twelve months later the contact form is silently broken, the plugin stack is three versions behind, and the "2024" in the footer is quietly telling every visitor the business may no longer be trading.

This is a plain answer to the question we get asked most after launch: what actually needs doing, how often, and what it should cost in Malaysia.

What breaks on an unmaintained website

  • Forms stop delivering. An expired SMTP key or a changed inbox rule kills lead delivery with no error anyone sees. This is the most expensive failure we find, and the most common.
  • Security drifts. Outdated plugins and themes are the entry point for the vast majority of hacked Malaysian SME sites.
  • Speed decays. Uncompressed images added by staff over a year turn a fast site into a slow one, which Google notices.
  • Content goes stale. Old prices, closed branches, staff who left. Every one of these costs trust at the exact moment someone was deciding.
  • SSL and domain lapse. A missed renewal takes the whole site offline, usually on a public holiday.

The maintenance schedule we recommend

Weekly

Automated off-site backup, uptime monitoring, and a real test submission through your main enquiry form. That last one takes 30 seconds and catches the failure nobody else does.

Monthly

Security and dependency updates, broken-link check, image and speed check on your top five pages, and a one-page report: sessions, enquiries, top landing pages, top search queries. If your provider cannot show enquiries, you are buying hosting, not marketing.

Quarterly

Content review — prices, service lists, team, portfolio. Refresh one strong existing page rather than publishing three weak new ones. Re-check Core Web Vitals on mobile, since most Malaysian traffic is mobile.

Annually

Domain and SSL renewals confirmed in writing, full restore test from backup (a backup you have never restored is a hope, not a backup), and an honest look at whether the design still matches how you sell today.

What it should cost in Malaysia

Roughly, for an SME site: RM100–300 a month buys hosting, backups, updates and uptime monitoring. RM500–1,500 a month adds content updates, SEO work and reporting. Anything advertised as "free maintenance forever" usually means nobody is looking at your site at all. What matters is not the tier name but whether the scope names deliverables you can verify each month.

Questions to ask your current provider this week

  1. Where are my backups stored, and when was the last successful restore test?
  2. Who owns my domain and hosting accounts — my company or your agency?
  3. Can I get an export of my site and content if we part ways?
  4. What was my enquiry count last month, and from which pages?
  5. How quickly do you respond if the site goes down on a Sunday?

Insist on owning your own domain registrar login. It is the single most common source of pain when an SME changes agency.

Where automation reduces the workload

Maintenance is not only technical hygiene. The reason to keep the site healthy is that it keeps producing enquiries, and those enquiries need to be tracked and followed up. Sending every form and WhatsApp lead into a CRM means you can see whether a slow month was traffic, conversion or follow-up. An AI chatbot covers the after-hours questions that would otherwise turn into missed calls.
